Gigs in Greensboro (GIG)

An internship & professional development program run by Xtern Software

We are so excited to introduce our Gigs in Greensboro (GIG) Cohort!

This signature program will combine Xtern's deep roots in our community through volunteer & civic organizations with our desire to provide greater professional pathways to our local college graduates.

For: UNCG Computer Science majors

Students must be rising Juniors or Seniors who have successfully completed CS 330 with a grade of C or better. (We hope to expand this program to other 4-year Computer Science programs in the near future!)

Complete: A paid summer internship at Xtern Software through Campus Greensboro

Students must apply and be accepted into the 10-week Campus Greensboro Summer Fellows program. This paid summer internship includes professional development and networking opportunities through Campus Greensboro. Learn more about the Summer Fellows program.

Build: Technology to benefit the City of Greensboro's Parks & Recreation Department

This paid technology service project work will take place during the summer internship. Learn more about the City's Parks & Recreation Department.

Visit: Local employers with the UNCG Career & Professional Development department

Participate in tech treks where real-world technology professionals will share their experiences. Students will participate in prep sessions with UNCG and then visit the offices of local employers. Learn more about UNCG Career & Professional Development.

Win: A scholarship while gaining valuable work experience!

The scholarship will be awarded at a luncheon in May each year. To be eligible, students must have successfully completed their internship (in which they worked on the technology service project), and participated in at least 2 employer treks.

Our progress so far: Here's what we accomplished in year one

A public-facing dashboard that aggregates all kinds of data about the City of Greensboro's rec centers, helping the department demonstrate its value to various stakeholders, such as city council, grant-making agencies, and the public: https://gigsgso.com/

An employee-facing survey platform that department employees can use to easily create surveys to capture data in circumstances where there is a dearth of information. Having more data would demonstrate ROI for facilities, programs, and events, which is especially helpful for the department's national accreditation.
